Mycelial Memories explores the profound interconnections between natural systems and human documentation through an immersive virtual reality experience that reimagines mushrooms as interfaces between biological wisdom and digital memory. Drawing inspiration from the vast underground networks of mycelium, this work creates a parallel digital system where fungi become the mediators of human cultural memory, perceiving and observing this world through unique senses. How might they encode human activity and civilization, weaving it into their organic being?
In this virtual environment, viewers traverse through a bioluminescent digital forest populated by various species of mushrooms, each uniquely adapted to preserve and present different aspects of human civilization. As visitors approach these virtual fungi, documentary memories pops up in front of viewer’s eye. The videos themselves capture the multifaceted nature of human existence – from urban development to cultural celebrations, technological advancement to environmental changes.
