Artist/ Director statement

Home is more than just a place where you live, it is a place where we create and store some of our most precious memories.

Our memories are our own, they’re unique, intangible and can disappear at any moment but that’s what makes them so special. This film acts as a memory bank containing a special memory from each of the artists from their home When experimenting with light and shadow we found it created a softness that visually interpreted our memories of home.

During the production process, a laser cutter was used to cut each of the frames. In a dark room, a spotlight was then shone through the frames, with fire, smoke, and various translucent materials utilised to reveal the imagery for each of the individual animations.

The film is presented alongside the paper cuttings in the form of an immersive exhibition where the viewers will be surrounded by artist memories. Audiences are encouraged to use a touch to interact with the shadows. This unique interaction allows the audience to view the exhibition however they choose, in the same way that no one’s memories are the same, we want to create a completely individual experience for every member. To further connect the audience to the memories, audio has been collected by family members from the actual location of each memory.

When developing the film we found the light gave a soft, hazy line, which reminded us of old films. This classic style gave us the inspiration to create titles for each clip. This gives a very classic feel to the film which marries well with slight jitter of each frame. To further connect the audience to the memories we decided to get family members to record the sounds from the actual location of our memories.
